Find a printer on campus

Campus printing extends beyond the Library. Page 4 of the official 2026/27 Freshmen Guide lists YEUNG 4/F, the Library at YEUNG 3/F, LI 4/F and G/F Room G601, and CMC 4/F as major release stations. YEUNG 4/F is separate from the Library at 3/F. Follow the submission and release steps below for central quota jobs.

Enter the Library at the YEUNG (formerly AC1) 3/F entrance level with a valid student card. It has five free A4 B&W release stations: two in Printing Room 2, one in Printing Room 3 and two in Information Space. Five counts only these Library areas, not all campus printers. Paper is supplied for the central quota service.

A workstation submits a job; a release station produces the output. OVAL and Information Space workstations default to the free quota queue. Media PCs, Law Section and nearby E-Resources workstations default to charged printing.

Current Library hours, 9 Aug 2026–10 Jan 2027: daily 08:30–23:00, closed 25 Dec 2026 and 1 Jan 2027. Late Reading Room access does not establish access to Library printers after closing. For colour/A3 or exhausted quota, bring Octopus to a charged location below.

How much free quota do I get, and how do I check?

The published figure is 1,600 black-and-white print credits, stated on page 17 of the official 2025/26 postgraduate orientation. The ITS service page updated in July 2026 gives no numeric allocation. A universal 1,600-credit entitlement for every student category in 2026/27 is therefore still unconfirmed.

The allocation rules provide an annual allowance a few days before Semester A starts for new intakes and existing regular students; new research students receive it when accounts are created. Unused quota does not roll over, transfer or refund, and no extra quota is added for summer or term breaks. Use charged printing when exhausted.

Credits are not physical sheets. In the central Quota Controlled Fast Print Queue, a single printed side normally uses 1 credit; a sheet printed on both sides uses 1.5. A 20-page document uses 20 credits single-sided, or 15 on 10 duplex sheets. This concession is for that quota queue; charged duplex printing bills both sides.

  1. Check your remaining quota

Sign in with EID on a CSC Teaching Studio workstation, then choose Application Menu → Check Print Quota. Your balance must cover the whole job.

  2. First use: account not found

For Account doesn’t exist or You have not entered a valid username, the FAQ says quota may not yet be assigned. First submit a job from a CSC Teaching Studio workstation or supported notebook, then retry your card. If unresolved, bring your EID and error screenshot to the student IT Service Desk, LI 4/F, 3442 6488.

Residence printing: Kowloon Tong and Ma On Shan

A documented Kowloon Tong print location is Hall 9 (Sir Gordon and Lady Ivy Wu Hall), Computer and Printing Room LG01 at LG/F. Its official page states daily 08:00–02:00, no prior security-counter registration, computers/scanner/printer for residents, and your own paper for printing. Confirm access before visiting another Hall; these facilities and rules do not establish an identical service in every Hall.

The current KLT rules directory still lists hall computer rooms and laser printing: CityUHK students/staff may use them, with priority for that hall’s residents. Carry student ID, follow the instructions beside the printer and report faults to the hall security counter. The older location table places Halls 1–8/11 at G/F and Hall 10 at P1/F; use Hall 9’s specific LG01 location. Hall 9 explicitly requires your own paper; equipment, queues and paper arrangements in other halls are not assumed identical.

The MOS Printing Room opens daily 08:00–02:00 next day. The SRO instructions and the July 2026 ITS WebPrint guide both show ccstung1\csc_quota_queue in their job screenshots, linking the residence workflow to the same central free-quota queue. That queue provides paper and deducts your balance on release; it is not an additional residence allowance. A June 2026 residence notice also confirms CSC server maintenance affects printing. The entrance photo shows “12” outside, but the precise tower/floor still needs a reliable location; the number alone is not taken as a room designation.

  1. MOS: upload through the current service

Connect to CityU WLAN (WPA) or the University VPN. Open https://printing.its.cityu.edu.hk:9192 and sign in with EID and the corresponding password. Web Print → Submit a Job → choose the free-quota queue → one copy as required → Upload Documents → Upload from computer → Upload & Complete. Convert PPTX to PDF first.

  2. Confirm the job and balance

After Held in a queue appears, log out and take your student card to the residence Printing Room. Uploading does not deduct quota; release does. Do not repeatedly upload to hurry the printer.

  3. Tap student ID and release your job

At the matching free release station: CityUHK ID → Print Release → select your document → Print. Check pages and duplex orientation, collect the output and log out. A free job does not automatically become an Octopus-charged job.

Charges and which printers need your own paper

Quota printing uses your allocated University allowance; the Library quota service is A4 black and white. For colour or A3, choose a charged device that supports those options instead of relying on the default printer.

The central free quota queue and listed charged printers supply paper. Small Teaching Studio / Express printers require your own paper: select the local printer in Work Desk Menu, check availability, load paper and print from your application. Local printers deduct quota on submission; the central quota queue deducts on release.

Submit from your phone or computer

Connect your own device to CityU WLAN, or use the University VPN as instructed. Quota printing supports Mobility Print, which requires software, and WebPrint, which needs no agent but accepts only selected file types.

For occasional printing use WebPrint without installing software. Connect to CityU WLAN (WPA) or University VPN. Export the required pages to PDF and check paper size, orientation and scaling. If WebPrint lacks your required duplex/layout controls, use a campus workstation or Mobility Print with those print properties; exporting PDF alone does not set duplex printing.

  1. Sign in

Open WebPrint with EID/password and select Submit a Job.

  2. Upload one copy

Set Copies to 1, then Upload Documents → Upload from computer, choose the file and Upload & Complete. The quota queue permits one copy per job; multiple-copy jobs may be deleted.

  3. Check the queue

Verify filename, pages and awaiting-release status, then Log Out. Unreleased jobs are not kept overnight; release them the same day.

Release the job and collect the output

After submitting a central campus job, use a designated release station at YEUNG 4/F, the Library quota areas, LI 4/F / G601, or CMC 4/F above; match the displayed service to your queue. An Octopus-only Library device will not show free jobs. Follow the separate residence rules above. The current campus guide supports a student card or CityUHK Mobile ID.

The central free queue deducts quota at release; small Teaching Studio/Express printers deduct it at submission. If a job is missing, check the queue before resubmitting. Report the location, time and error to support.

  1. Check the station and job

At a quota release station, tap your student card or scan CityUHK Mobile ID. Select your file, check page count and exclude duplicates/errors.

  2. Print and collect

Select Print at the lower right. The central quota queue deducts on release. If red lights, paper jam or empty paper occur, ask staff before resubmitting.

  3. Check and exit

Check content/pages/copies, collect all sheets and select Exit at the upper right. Charged devices use Octopus; duplex charging counts printed sides.

Colour, A3 or no quota: use the charged-printing workflow

A free WebPrint job does not become a charged job at an Octopus machine. At LI 4/F by the Service Desk or CMC 4/F, use a CSC computer and choose the charged BW/Color queue for the required device. The following is the University-linked Konica Secure Print workflow for equipment showing these fields.

  1. Choose the charged queue and release credentials

Connect to the required Library/IS or CSC charged queue through Work Desk Menu and check paper, colour, duplex and copies. When Secure Print/User Settings appears, set this job’s Secure Print ID (up to 16 characters) and password (up to 8), retain both and select OK. Re-enter that pair at the machine; these are job-release credentials, not automatically your EID password.

  2. Release at the matching device

Bring sufficient Octopus value. At the matching printer, choose User Box → Secure Print User Box, enter the same ID/password, select the file and Start. Duplex costs two sides; insufficient value stops printing.

  3. Check output and sign off

Collect the output and Octopus card and exit. For an error or a charge without output, note the queue, time and pages and contact support before paying for another copy.

Copy from paper; choose a destination for scans

Library copying equipment supports A4/A3 and black-and-white/colour options. Set the original size and intended output, check one page, then copy the rest.

Use a scanner for an electronic copy. Equipment is available in the Library Information Space and LI scanning areas, with OCR on some devices. Check how to save, open the result to verify clarity, orientation and pages, and collect your original.

Scanners are at LI G/F CSC Open Access Area and LI 4/F Printing & Scanning Area. Place the original, choose a destination/output format, and use OCR Searchable PDF when searchable text is needed. Scan the pages, save, then open the saved file to check it; preview is not proof of saving. Retrieve originals and your files from shared workstations. Student IT support: +852 3442 6488 / IT.ServiceDesk@cityu.edu.hk, LI 4/F; Mon–Fri 08:30–21:30, Sat 09:00–17:00, closed Sun/public holidays.

For Library OCR scanning, use Oval PC 311 or Information Space PCs 816, 826, 835, 855 and 865. Log in with EID, launch scanning software using the instructions on the scanner lid, choose the destination/format, preview, scan and save. Use Searchable PDF/OCR for searchable text. Library equipment support is opposite the Oval: 3442 6963 / libemt@cityu.edu.hk, separate from student IT at LI 4/F.

Common questions

Open to read
Does submission immediately use my quota?

It depends on the service. The central campus free queue deducts on release; small CSC Teaching Studio / Express printers deduct on submission. Identify the queue before printing; do not release an incorrectly configured central job.

Why are colour or A3 options missing?

You may have selected an A4 black-and-white quota queue or a device without that format. Check the service and equipment; quota printing does not support every size or colour option.

Do residences provide another 1,600 credits?

Moving locations does not create another allowance. Current MOS and campus WebPrint guides show the same csc_quota_queue: release deducts your central free quota and paper is supplied. The 2026/27 initial amount and current equipment/paper arrangements in other KLT halls remain unconfirmed. Hall 9 LG01 requires your own paper.

Major campus release locations are checked against the official 2026/27 Freshmen Guide; Hall-specific KLT sources and MOS facilities are cited separately. The 1,600 figure remains from 2025/26 material. Missing floor or rule details do not establish absence of a printer.
