connectivity Get connected on campus and in residence CityUHK
Choose wireless or wired access
For Wi-Fi on campus or in residence, follow the wireless setup guide. For a room Ethernet connection, check your residence location and wired adapter. Their configuration and registration steps differ.
| Setting and connection | Start here |
|---|---|
| Campus Wi-Fi | Wireless setup guide for your device |
| Kowloon Tong residence Ethernet | Prepare the Ethernet MAC address for a Residential Connection Request |
| Ma On Shan residence network | Residence-specific Wi-Fi and wall/AP LAN-port instructions |
Wi-Fi: follow the guide for your device
First activate your EID, then use the official Windows, macOS, iPhone or Android guide for the network available at your location. Campus guides list CityU WLAN and eduroam; the Ma On Shan move-in page also lists CityU_Hall_WLAN.
For campus CityU WLAN (WPA), use your EID; for eduroam, use EID@cityu.edu.hk. Use the Network Connection Password, rather than a student number or assuming the full email address works everywhere. If forgotten, bring your student card to LI 4/F IT Service Desk for reset.
Open Wi-Fi settings
On campus choose CityU WLAN (WPA), enter EID and your network connection password. On iPhone/iPad use Settings → Wi-Fi; on Windows/Mac select the same SSID in the system Wi-Fi menu.
iPhone: verify the server certificate
Check the certificate is for auth.wifi.cityu.edu.hk and issued by Sectigo RSA Organization Validation Secure Server CA before confirming. If different or a security error appears, stop and ask IT.
Android: enter enterprise-network fields
Identity: EID; Password: network connection password; EAP: PEAP; Phase 2: MSCHAPV2; CA Certificate: Use System Certificates; Domain: cityu.edu.hk. If options are unavailable or certificate validation fails, ask IT to configure the device.
Test access
After connected status appears, load both a University page and a normal public page. After a password change, remove an outdated saved profile and reconnect with the new password.
Kowloon Tong Ethernet: register the wired adapter
Prepare an Ethernet cable and adapter. A USB-C computer can use an external Ethernet adapter. Register that wired adapter’s MAC address, not a Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or virtual adapter address.
Open Residential Connection Request in the Service Portal, choose New, enter the wired MAC address, accept the terms and submit. Connect the room port to your computer with a cable and check the request under My Request.
Read the active Ethernet MAC
Windows 11: Settings → Network & internet → Advanced network settings → Hardware and connection properties, then Ethernet Physical address; ipconfig /all also lists it. Mac: System Settings/Preferences → Network → active Ethernet → Details/Advanced → Hardware. Read the external adapter’s address if used.
Register in Service Portal
Use the path above to Residential Connection Request. Choose New, enter wired MAC, check resident details and accept the terms if you agree, then Submit. Keep the request number and check My Request. Use Device Replacement after changing adapters.
Connect and test
Set IPv4 to automatic/Using DHCP and connect your cable to the room outlet. Test University and public pages. A submitted request without access needs the MAC/outlet checks and support below.
Ma On Shan and connection troubleshooting
For Ma On Shan wired access, connect your own cable to the room network socket or AP LAN port and set the computer to DHCP. The published instructions do not require copying the Kowloon Tong MAC application. Test browsing after connection. For wireless access, use the University network supplied locally, such as CityU_Hall_WLAN in the Ma On Shan moving-in instructions.
For a failed wired connection, check the cable, adapter, port and whether the registered MAC matches the current device. Residence guidance does not permit personal routers, switches or hubs to share the connection. For unresolved issues, give the student IT Service Desk your residence, room, OS and error: 3442 6488 or IT.ServiceDesk@cityu.edu.hk.
For a fault record hall/room, outlet/AP number, OS, whether one or all devices fail and the error. Kowloon Tong: +852 3442 3190 / sronetwork@cityu.edu.hk, also report through AIMS. Ma On Shan: scan the lobby repair QR code and include outlet/AP number. Campus Wi-Fi: student IT, 3442 6488 / IT.ServiceDesk@cityu.edu.hk. If connected without access, check automatic IP/DNS and obsolete proxy settings. Keep the ticket number and retest after repair.
Connect the MOS device first
For Wi-Fi choose the on-site CityU_Hall_WLAN and use your university identity under the residence guide. For Ethernet, use your cable from the room port or AP LAN port and set IPv4 to automatic/DHCP. Do not assume KLT MAC registration applies.
Distinguish device, port and account faults
Compare another device you own at the same location. If only one fails, check its saved password, cable/adapter, automatic IP/DNS and invalid proxy settings. If several fail, record the room and AP/port number. Do not connect a router to share the connection.
Report through the correct location and retest
At MOS scan the lobby fault-report QR code and provide AP/port, room, device, time and error. For KLT residence network use sronetwork@cityu.edu.hk / 3442 3190. Keep the reference, follow up the same case and test both university and public sites after repair.
At another university: connect through eduroam
At participating institutions, connect to eduroam using EID@cityu.edu.hk and your Network Connection Password, not your student-email address. Test the connection at CityUHK before travelling. Network roaming does not grant access to another university’s buildings or library borrowing.
Select eduroam and enter the correct identity
Choose eduroam in Wi-Fi settings and enter EID@cityu.edu.hk with your Network Connection Password. Android uses PEAP/MSCHAPV2; retain certificate validation as described in the University device guide.
Verify the certificate and test
Check the University authentication-server certificate using the phone settings described above. Stop and contact IT if the name differs or a security error appears. Test a webpage; after a password change, remove the old profile and reconnect.
