Understand prepaid and monthly service

Prepaid service uses stored value/packages and expiry dates; monthly service may have a contract. Compare validity, data-exhaustion rules, renewal and cancellation as well as the headline price.

As an editorial checklist, confirm SIM/eSIM compatibility and check local data, roaming and SMS separately before choosing a service.

Register using your own identity

Local monthly and prepaid SIM services require registration before activation. HKID holders must use HKID; non-holders use a valid identity document with the required declarations.

Users under16 need endorsement by an adult aged18 or over, the adult’s details and relationship. HKID-holding prepaid users should use iAM Smart for instant identity verification; without it the operator verifies manually before activation, with timing varying by operator. Real-name registration is free. Without HKID use an accepted valid travel document/passport; HKSAR and BN(O) passports are not accepted substitutes for this purpose.

Complete registration through the official channel

Follow the provider’s official site, app or shop process. Check the number/ICCID and identity information, read the terms, and wait for the confirmation SMS. Screens differ by provider and card.

Do not buy unknown-source pre-registered cards. Handle verification requests through the provider’s official channel; OFCA identifies registration notifications with sender ID #SIMREG.

  1. Prepare the card and document

Keep the ICCID and number from the SIM pack. Insert prepaid SIM, enable mobile data and disconnect Wi-Fi to receive the operator’s message, or use the matching brand link below.

  2. Identify the correct SIM

Enter/check the number or ICCID and receive any required one-time code. For eSIM use its supplied number/card details; do not register the wrong line.

  3. Verify your own identity

HKID holders select HKID and authorise required iAM Smart details, photographing the original card if prompted. Without HKID, select an accepted travel document, photograph the original clearly and make the required no-HKID/no-other-document declarations.

  4. Check and submit

Check Chinese/English name, birth date and document number, fix OCR errors, read the data statement and confirm. Await the success SMS/account activation; pending manual review is not rejection.

  5. If no SMS or verification fails

Check card number, document type, glare/cropping and matching details. Give the listed operator the phone number, partial ICCID, submission time and exact error, asking for correction or manual verification. Registration verification has no fee.

Test service and record renewal arrangements

After activation, test local data and incoming SMS, then record the number, expiry, renewal method and support channel. This is editorial preparation advice; give support the device, registration status and error if service fails.

Deregister a prepaid SIM when no longer used or transferred. Before changing/stopping a number, check University contacts and authentication bindings for banking, email and other accounts.

Practical test: on a dual-SIM phone select the Hong Kong line for mobile data, temporarily disable Wi-Fi and open a webpage; send an ordinary SMS to it from another phone. If registration succeeded but data fails, check that the plan includes Hong Kong data, is active and has remaining balance/validity. Use the APN instructions supplied for that specific card, not another brand’s settings. Respond to a #SIMREG re-verification notice through the official channel by its deadline; non-response can deregister the line. Use the operator contacts for service faults, or OFCA2961 6333 for regulatory enquiries.

  1. Confirm both registration and data entitlement

Check the success SMS/account registration state; wait for manual verification if pending. Check this card’s Hong Kong data package, balance and expiry. Registration alone does not purchase data.

  2. Test data and SMS with Wi-Fi off

On a dual-SIM phone select the Hong Kong SIM for mobile data, turn off Wi-Fi temporarily and open a webpage. Have another phone send an SMS to confirm reception. For no data use the APN for your exact brand/card type.

  3. Ask the correct operator to identify the failure

Provide the phone number, last ICCID digits, device, registration time/status and error. Ask whether identity verification, package or network setup is responsible. Before stopping/transferring a number cancel your registration and update banking, university and email verification bindings.

Keep the prepaid number when moving to another plan

A prepaid Hong Kong number can be ported to another operator. Ask the new operator for MNP, supplying the number, registered name/identity number, address, old/new operators, preferred cut-over date and signature. Retain the old SIM and holder for verification.

Do not cancel the old number first: terminated numbers cannot be ported. The new operator verifies the request and arranges cut-over; the old service then ends. Fit the new SIM and test data/calls/SMS. Port-out itself is free from the original operator, but confirm outstanding bills, early-termination charges, new-operator fees and treatment of prepaid credit. Normal processing is around 1–2 days; mismatched details can delay it.

Common questions

Open to read
Can I register before receiving an HKID?

Non-HKID holders can use valid identity documentation with the required declarations, subject to provider verification. Existing HKID holders must use HKID.

Does a signal mean registration has succeeded?

Check the provider’s registration/activation confirmation and account status, then test actual data and SMS. Ask official support about failures.
